Lower School Extracurricular Activities

For our students in Junior Kindergarten through fifth grade, we are pleased to offer a variety of extracurricular activities that compliment your child's education outside of the classroom. Please see descriptions of our offerings, along with some of the flyers, below!

If you have any questions regarding the extracurricular activities that are offered, please feel free to contact your Lower School Director, Gabby Kaplan.

Please note that extracurricular activities, times and days are subject to change.

Berkeley Chess

Chess is offered to students Grades K-5 in the Lower school through the Berkeley Chess organization.  Chess is fun and can be learned quickly and easily. Studies have found that chess helps improve test results in reading, science, and math, and produces growth in critical cognitive skills. Beyond academia, chess influences social behavior including self esteem, respect for others, patience, and good sportsmanship. For these reasons we offer participation to our younger students as well as our Upper school students who have the opportunity to participate in chess clubs organized by the Middle School Coordinator.

Lego-Tek

Quarry Lane School invites the Play-Well TEKnologies group to our campus to provide project-based programs designed to teach principles and methods of engineering, architecture, and science to elementary students, utilizing LEGO™ and other building systems. Building problem-solving skills, providing an opportunity for creative expression, fostering a greater appreciation of how things work, and encouraging the qualities of inquisitiveness, self- reliance, and self-confidence in children through fun-filled engineering and architectural projects that both the children and instructors enjoy. This program sets a foundation for creativity in engineering that will serve our students well as they move into the Middle and Upper schools programs and have access to the applied science and technology programs and robotic clubs and competitions.

Sarah’s Science “Toyology”

Focusing on the major scientific concepts of energy, electricity, light, gravity, motion, friction, magnetism and simple machines this class is designed to a fun and creative way to further enhance exposure to scientific concepts for elementary students.

Art and Soul Music, Art and Soul Art Class

Monthly art classes are offered to elementary students that will focus on a new Master Artist each month. Multiple medias are explored throughout the year, from clay building, to painting, to collage, to sculpture, to oil and chalk pastels. These programs work in conjunction with our established art curriculum and offer addition time for students to work in specific areas and with a variety of mediums.

Music lessons are also offered through Art and Soul Music on the Quarry Lane Campus for students Kindergarten through twelfth (12) grades. Both private and semi-private (2 – 3students) lessons are available for beginner through intermediate levels.  The Art and Soul music program works closely with the Director of Music and helps to groom younger student for entrance in the jazz band and upper school orchestras.

Stage Presence

Designed to reach those students who are interested in theater or perhaps are shy, this fun, interactive drama class will promote public speaking skills, voice, movement, improvisation, fluency, and confidence. Students will memorize, recite, and present monologues, skits, poetry, play games and more. This class will allow students the opportunity to create, and be creative.

Story Writing

To further enhance the language arts curriculum and provide additional opportunity for our students to employ writing techniques taught in their core classrooms Quarry Lane offers a story writing class to the elementary students. Students work on proof reading skills, editing skills, illustration, the understanding of story sequence, reading comprehension and organization in writing.

Mandarin

In the hopes of developing interest in Mandarin so that students may be inspired to select Mandarin as a foreign language choice in the middle and upper school, Quarry Lane offers Mandarin as an after school enrichment program.

Hindi

As the population of Quarry Lane is very diverse and we have numerous students who have parents that speak Hindi as a first language. There was an interest and exposing our students to this language. The class has as it goal to provide and initial exposure to Hindi and lead students up to conversational Hindi.
